In France, we really appreciate a good cup of coffee, but let me be honest: when I guide clients in Strasbourg, I often tell them to meet me at Starbucks simply because it is super easy to find. That said, I do not recommend going there for quality, it’s everything but a great coffee... That’s why I prefer to suggest real local coffee shops, places with character, soul, and, most importantly, a passion for the bean. Here are my top picks for coffee shops in Strasbourg that are worth your time!
Café Bretelles - La Petite France
Café Bretelles is a charming specialty coffee shop with two locations in Strasbourg: one at 36 Rue du Bain-aux-Plantes and another at 57 Rue de Zurich, 67000 Strasbourg.
They serve expertly prepared espresso-based drinks and hand-brewed coffees, with a very warm, relaxed local atmosphere. It’s a cozy spot to work, chat, or just enjoy a high-quality cup of coffee!
I totally recommend visiting the one in Petite France at 36 Rue du Bain-aux-Plantes; it is small but very cozy, the coffee is incredible, and sometimes they even have little pastries, so honestly go go go. Just make sure to call ahead to check if they have space.
Café Potager - A great spot in the heart of the city
The Café Potager is located at 5 Rue des Francs Bourgeois, 67000 Strasbourg.
This “fast-good” café offers a range of homemade dishes, pastries, and quality drinks. Their coffee is sourced from the artisan roaster Mokxa, based in Strasbourg, and is even delivered by bike.
The decor is very green and Zen, with plants and a relaxing vibe; there is free WiFi and plugs if you want to work from there.
If you sit by the window or outside, you can watch the trams go by and enjoy the flow of the city. In the evening, you can even catch the lights and reflections from the nearby Galeries Lafayette, which makes the atmosphere really charming. Honestly, it is an amazing spot right in the heart of the city!
They are open from 09:00 (10:00 on Sundays) and have long opening hours depending on the day.
Cafés du Monde - Grand' Rue
Cafés du Monde is found at 116 Grand’Rue, 67000 Strasbourg.
This is a specialty coffee boutique where you can taste coffee from around the world, with a strong focus on single-origin beans. The space is cozy and calm, ideal for sampling new coffees, relaxing, or buying beans to take home.
Café du Monde is usually quite calm, even though there is an amazing bakery next door that is always packed, which often sends people here instead. It is still a great address, the coffee is very good, and the room has a cozy feel even if it is on the smaller side. They serve simple, straightforward drinks, so do not expect vanilla macchiato latte creations, but what they offer is genuinely delicious and the team is friendly!
Origin - Vegan friendly option!
Origin is a 100% vegan and organic coffee shop at 122 Grand’Rue, 67000 Strasbourg.
Everything there is plant-based: pastries (croissants, cinnamon rolls, etc.), sandwiches, salads, quiches, all made without animal products. They partner with Mokxa for their coffee, so you still get specialty coffee.
The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, with a few tables inside and a terrace on the Grand’Rue.
It is also worth mentioning that the same cooperative runs a vegan cantina called La Bouture in the Rivetoile area of Strasbourg. They really know what they are doing. Vegan does not mean bland or strange here, everything is full of flavour and extremely well made!
Their coffees, pastries, and even the small takeaway meals they sometimes offer are genuinely impressive. Whether you are vegan or not, you should absolutely give it a try because it is simply excellent :)
