Why visit Strasbourg?

Jeudi, Août 21, 2025 about Strasbourg

Strasbourg is one of Europe’s most distinctive cities. At the crossroads of France and Germany, it combines the best of both cultures while offering its own identity. Famous for its Christmas market, which welcomed over 3.4 million visitors in 2024, the city also has much more to offer all year round!

Strasbourg shines at the heart of Europe: a city shaped by centuries of French and German influence. Its historic core, the Grande-Île, was the first urban centre in France to be inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1988 as a whole ensemble of streets, canals, and landmarks recognized for their exceptional value.

In 2017, this UNESCO designation was proudly expanded to include the Neustadt, the late-19th-century “new town” developed under German administration. Today, Grande-Île and Neustadt together offer one of Europe’s most compelling urban stories, where medieval charm and imperial grandeur meet in one vibrant setting.

Highlights you cant' miss

The heart of Strasbourg is without doubt the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, a masterpiece of Gothic art whose spire dominates the skyline. Visitors can admire its stained glass, the astronomical clock, and climb up for sweeping views across the city and even the Black Forest.

Not far from there, the district of Petite France is one of the city’s most charming areas, with its canals, cobbled streets, and half-timbered houses. Strolling along the Ill River, crossing the Ponts Couverts or the Vauban Dam, gives a true sense of Strasbourg’s character.

But Strasbourg is not only about monuments. It is also a city of culture, home to major museums such as those in the Palais Rohan, the Alsatian Museum, and the Tomi Ungerer Museum. The Opéra national du Rhin is another highlight for those who enjoy music, ballet, or opera. Beyond institutions, Strasbourg’s culture lives in its cafés, theaters, and local festivals throughout the year.

No visit would be complete without discovering Alsatian food. Tarte flambée, choucroute, bretzels, kougelhopf, and wines like Riesling or Gewürztraminer make Strasbourg a paradise for food lovers. Local winstubs (traditional Alsatian taverns) offer an authentic taste of the region in a warm, convivial setting.

A city full of hidden gems

Strasbourg also has plenty of surprises beyond its main landmarks. Beneath the old hospital lies the Historic Wine Cellar, founded in the 14th century and home to a legendary barrel from 1472, believed to be the oldest wine still preserved in a barrel anywhere in the world.

In the Neustadt district, the Egyptian House (1905) catches the eye with its colorful Art Nouveau façade decorated with exotic motifs. For a calmer escape, the Jardin des Deux-Rives, a vast cross-border park linked by the Mimram footbridge over the Rhine, offers green space and cultural events throughout the year.

Finally, architecture lovers will enjoy discovering lesser-known Art Nouveau gems like the Villa Schutzenberger, a graceful mansion now hosting the European Audiovisual Observatory.

Strasbourg may be best known for its Christmas market, but its charm extends far beyond the festive season. Between its UNESCO-listed historic center, striking architecture, rich cultural scene, and delicious Alsatian food, the city offers something unique in every season. Whether you’re drawn by its iconic cathedral, its picturesque canals, or its hidden corners full of surprises, Strasbourg is a place that blends history and modernity like no other!
